REMODULIN^TM RECEIVES ORPHAN DRUG DESIGNATION IN AUSTRALIA

Melbourne, Australia, June 14, 2001: Orphan Australia Pty Ltd submitted an application to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia to have Remodulin^TM (treprostinil sodium), formerly known as Uniprost or UT-15, designated as an orphan drug.

The application for orphan drug designation was approved on 29 May 2001 for the indication of pulmonary arterial hypertension.

This designation represents a significant regulatory step for the treatment of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension in Australia. Without treatment, the median survival for these patients is 2-3 years from diagnosis. Remodulin, a prostacyclin analogue, is delivered subcutaneously using a small infusion pump carried by the patient.

Remodulin is currently awaiting registration approval in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and in France by the Agence du Medicament. Phase III clinical trials of Remodulin in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension included a trial site in Australia. The Australian site is also participating in the ongoing continuation study of Remodulin sponsored by United Therapeutics Corporation and supported by Orphan Australia.
